Amidst the jumpy markets these past few weeks, it's time to focus on earnings to get a sense of things again.  Earnings reports from the financial services group like Goldman Sachs on Tuesday, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. on Wednesday; and Bear Stearns Cos. Inc. on Thursday.Goldman Sachs's first-quarter profit is suppose to be $4.84 a share. They closed $201.70 on Friday, keep your eye on their price movement as investors reaction should somewhat tell what to expect.  They traded a ...

This week should kick-off more earnings.  There's a few out this week that I felt warranted a quick briefing, a good few days for you to think about: A) Citigroup (Jan. 19, 2007): For the investment banks, 2006 was another great year, while GS was able to top off expectations with their earnings, and so everyone is the best with the others. Focus will be on 2007's guidance after a consensus that there should be a general economic slow-down, which will inevitably hit the banking indu...

NYX Should Start Coming Down

A little over a month ago, the big boys over at NYSE said they would cut over 500 positions, with a planned 400 employee lay-offs and terminating about 120 contractors. This 15%-16% cut in headcount makes sense, and I suppose there will be more to come in the coming year.  NYSE still has too many heads compared to other exchanges like LSE, NASDAQ and others. So what should you expect?  Well, with so many lay-offs you can expect a drop in their earnings ...

My September 21, 2006 Earnings Preview

Today will mark another great day for the markets.  A good few earnings to watch out for.  Palm, I expect a slow-down in earnings, particularly after guidance was given for lower sales back in September.  Their Treo hasn't performed well, after lower-priced competitor handset.  However, rumours yesterday on a possible acquisition might stir things up a bit.  Federal Express, continued strong earnings from upbeat business worldwide.  Economy remained strong, and th...
